How to Idiot-Proof Your Domain Name

January 30th, 2008

Starting your own website?

One of the first thing that comes to your mind is probably the domain name (the web address to type into the address panel of the web browser to get to your site). When you think of registering a domain name, you would want to choose the right one. Once you bought it, you are stuck with it for at least one year. Not a ‘life-or-death’ situation but you don’t want to waste money on a poorly-thought domain name which you’re not going to use.

So, let’s get started…

1) Choose a name that is easy to remember and related to your site content. For instance, you know right away what you’re going to find at coffeereview.com without even visiting it! As for tmcm.com, you can’t even imagine what’s the site for (actually, it’s short for ‘Too Much Coffee Man’).

2) Which brings us to the next tip, forget fancy names which confuses people. Unless it’s a funny site i.e. tmcm.com which is a comic site, you want to go straight to the point with your domain name.

3) And stick to .com domain names!. Yeah, you can have .net, .biz, .name, .info, .whatever but the most common denominator would be .com. Having a .com domain name gives the subliminal message that your site is ’serious business’. Generally, people prefer the most accepted conventions, so stick with .com!

4) Stay away from hyphens in your domain name. Yeah, yeah, yeah… it’s looks better when you look at it in the browser’s address panel, so what?? When you want to promote your website in the course of your conversations, imagine saying “I have a new website called, how-dash-to-dash-quit-dash-smoking.com” You are going to confuse a lotta people! It’s NOT normal conversation to pepper your sentences with ‘dashes’, ya!? It’s easier for you to say… and others to grasp if you say “my new website is called, howtoquitsmoking.com!

5) If possible, don’t use “4″ in place of “for”, “2″ for “to”, “U” for “you” or even numbers in your domain name. For instance, if you choose a name like halloweencostumes4u.com, you also need to register halloweencostumesforyou.com, halloweencostumesforu.com, halloweencostumes4you.com just so that you can redirect traffic from those domains to your main domain. Buying so many domain names just to do that is a waste of money!

6) If your choice of domain names are already taken, take a deep breath and relax! Think of variations and combinations of various keywords relevant to your site content. For instance, playguitar.com can be playgoodguitar.com, playsexyguitar.com, playguitarfast.com, playfolkguitar.com. Or howtoplayguitar.com, guitarcoach.com, guitartutor.com, guitarnewbie.com, you get my point…

7) Use prefix or suffix to create domain name variations by combining them with your keywords. Here are some words you can use as prefix - the, my, top, pro, best, super, ultra, cyber, simply, free, hot, smart, cool, daily.

Suffixes you can use are central, point, place, spot, portal, world, city, alley, now, resources, tools, review, guide, zone, lab, network, nation, today, insider, guru i.e. myplayguitarresources.com, simplyplayguitarguru.com, playguitartoday.com.

If you still find the above too much work, especially if there are too many domain names already taken in your chosen field, you may want to consider Mozzle Domain Name Pro.

When You’re New at Something… like Internet Marketing, Be Patient with Yourself!

January 20th, 2008

Yes… that’s right! Be patient with yourself! If you are just starting something new, give yourself a break! Remember the first time you learn cycling? How many times did you fall before getting it right? Or the first time you learn swimming? Or the first time you learn ______ (fill in the blank)?

For those of us trying to make sense out of Internet Marketing, I know you have thousands and millions of questions in your mind. Hold on! Relax! Take it one step at a time! You start with the easy stuff first… Grade One! Once you get it right, then move on to the next level.

So, where do I start?

Start right from where you are. Start with what you know first. Start with the easiest, which is what you already know and expand from there.

Don’t try to rush into things and wear yourself out by trying to learn EVERYTHING at one go. Forget it, that’s not going to work. Even at varsity, you start with (whatever subject) 101 first! So relax…

Give yourself small victories

What do I mean by that? Keep your focus. Learn ONE thing at a time and master it before going for something else. I know you just feeeeeeeeel that you neeeeeeeeed to learn everything as fast as possible. No, no, no! Relax… master one thing at a time and you’ll be glad you do that!

Each time you master something new, you have given yourself a small victory! Many victories will keep you motivated!

Be willing to test it out by ‘trial and error’

Remember you are NOT trying to learn driving on the busiest road in the city! You don’t have to worry that you are going to knock someone down or run down a fire hydrant!

The wonderful thing about all things IT is, you can make do with ‘trial and error’. Most of the time, there is an “Undo” button. If you can’t find that button or command on the menu, relax… just hold down the ‘Control’ (or for Mac users, the ‘Command’) button and press ‘Z’. That will “Undo” your previous action. Easy!

Go ahead and experiment!

Find your mentors

Just as you need a coach to teach you how to cycle, swim, ______ (whatever), therefore you need someone to guide you in Internet Marketing. Like any other business, you need people who have gone before you to show you the way. Yes, ebooks do play a major role here. In fact, I read a lot of ebooks myself. However, nothing beats live mentors to coach you.

How do I get a mentor?

Now before I answer that, you got to ask yourself this… do you have the right attitude to be mentored? Michael Jordan in his book Driven from Within, shares how he has always pushed himself to be the best, beating the next guy in front, setting the pace and standards. Perhaps we are not at Michael’s standards, but at least having the right perspective to being coached does go a long way to enhance our success! Get ready to learn and start doing…

Now, back to the question of getting the right mentor…

Scout around, see if you can build some rapport, try online sites and offline events such as Internet Marketing conferences & workshops, meet as many people in Internet Marketing as possible through offline and online channels. Strike up conversations and start relationships. When you come across a guru or someone who is more conversant in Internet Marketing, befriend them. Show your interest and knowledge in Internet Marketing. If both of you can resonate, perhaps you have something there. Work on it and see where it leads to. Be willing to learn and experiment. Get to know some peers who are starting out just like you. Together you can prod each other to the next level! Who knows you can be JV partners in your Internet Marketing projects.

The crucial element is TAKE ACTION!

Internet Marketing - What to do next?

January 14th, 2008

Last Saturday, I met up with a group of people eager to find out how to make money online.

One of them obviously had done some homework but still at a lost as to how and what to do next! I find many people wants to know how to do Internet Marketing. More often than not, they are sucked into the hype and noise of the so-called Internet-guru-wannabes.

Just as in any type of business, Internet Marketing is also a form of business. People seem to think that just because of the often-quoted success stories, they can be a success story without the hard work! Every thing worthwhile takes effort… I think I heard that saying somewhere before!

Having said so, I want to qualify that Internet Marketing is one of the easiest way for a person to start a business. Could be one of the lowest startup costs as well. However, all this also mean that since it is so easy and cheap to start off, anyone could do it. Just any how do it! That could also be the reason why many still do not get the success they had expected. They thought by just putting up a website… equals to ‘Internet Marketing’.

Well, all is not lost! It’s not too late! Doing it right, will reap the right results! Keep this blog in your sight! Bookmark it, RSS it, even opt-in to my email list to stay up-to-date with me on whyilikethis.com!

Cheers!

Absolutely Fastest and Shortest Way to Move Your WordPress Blog to Another Webhost… and Upgrade at the Same Time!

January 7th, 2008

I have been planning to move my WordPress for a month now. Finally, I did it last night. The first attempt was botched! It didn’t work… Arrgh..!

“There goes my WordPress blog! Say goodbye!”

Desperately, I searched through the documentation at WordPress site. Waalah! There is another option available… That was my last resort (was it?). I tried it and YES!!! It worked! Here’s how I did it…

EASY STEPS TO MOVE YOUR WORDPRESS

1) Backup your WordPress database from your old site. This contains your posts, comments, etc. You need to use phpMyAdmin to do it. Refer here for the step-by-step guide.

2) Using an FTP software i.e. FileZilla, download to your computer any additional plugins and themes that you used on your old site.

3) Login to your new site CPanel and click on Fantastico.

4) Create a new WordPress blog using the Fantastico interface. Use the same admin user name and password that you used for the old site.

5) Then, upload the downloaded plugins and themes to their respective folders in your new site.

6) Login to phpMyAdmin on your new site. Drop (delete) the database tables of the pre-installed Fantastico web.

7) Restore your database from your old WordPress site by importing your old .sql database file into your new site database.

If you old site is running an old version of WordPress (my old site was running on ver.2.2.2; new site running ver.2.3.1), your new WordPress site will not display correctly. You need to run the upgrade script i.e. http://yournewsite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php

That’s it! You’d moved and upgraded your WordPress to your new webhost!

Admittedly, this procedure shows only ONE WAY, using Fantastico. This is the most straight-forward method and avoid a lot of additional work. If you are not familiar with phpMyAdmin, it might be a good idea to learn it from someone first. Better yet, get someone to do it for you!

Oh yes… remember to ACTIVATE your plugins! And point the DNS servers to the new webhost!
