Absolutely Fastest and Shortest Way to Move Your WordPress Blog to Another Webhost… and Upgrade at the Same Time!
I have been planning to move my WordPress for a month now. Finally, I did it last night. The first attempt was botched! It didn’t work… Arrgh..!
“There goes my WordPress blog! Say goodbye!”
Desperately, I searched through the documentation at WordPress site. Waalah! There is another option available… That was my last resort (was it?). I tried it and YES!!! It worked! Here’s how I did it…
EASY STEPS TO MOVE YOUR WORDPRESS
1) Backup your WordPress database from your old site. This contains your posts, comments, etc. You need to use phpMyAdmin to do it. Refer here for the step-by-step guide.
2) Using an FTP software i.e. FileZilla, download to your computer any additional plugins and themes that you used on your old site.
3) Login to your new site CPanel and click on Fantastico.
4) Create a new WordPress blog using the Fantastico interface. Use the same admin user name and password that you used for the old site.
5) Then, upload the downloaded plugins and themes to their respective folders in your new site.
6) Login to phpMyAdmin on your new site. Drop (delete) the database tables of the pre-installed Fantastico web.
7) Restore your database from your old WordPress site by importing your old .sql database file into your new site database.
If you old site is running an old version of WordPress (my old site was running on ver.2.2.2; new site running ver.2.3.1), your new WordPress site will not display correctly. You need to run the upgrade script i.e. http://yournewsite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php
That’s it! You’d moved and upgraded your WordPress to your new webhost!
Admittedly, this procedure shows only ONE WAY, using Fantastico. This is the most straight-forward method and avoid a lot of additional work. If you are not familiar with phpMyAdmin, it might be a good idea to learn it from someone first. Better yet, get someone to do it for you!
Oh yes… remember to ACTIVATE your plugins! And point the DNS servers to the new webhost!
